The classic Blues harmonica player always used to have a bunch of gospel tunes in his repertoire. Jaybird Coleman, Sonny Terry, Terry Mc Millan, Charlie Mccoy all recorded several gospel songs. Gospel tunes usually have simple melodies and easy chord changes that make them a good choice for any harmonica player and don't require a ton of technique to sound good. They are often played in first position (the harmonica key is the same as the song key) and don't necessarily require any bends.
Reverend Dan Smith is one of the few harmonica players recording only exclusively gospel songs. His harmonica playing is very bluesy but with a touch of Folk and Country-music here and there. Papa Gordon Lightfoot recorded an excellent version of “Oh When the Saints go marching in” in 2nd position (A harmonica for key of E) that is bluesier than what traditional harmonica players would do and is a good example of a more modern and fuller sounding way to play gospel harmonica.
Harmo harmonicas are particularly well suited for Gospel songs: The Harmo Polar is a good starting point for players of any level offering more than 12 keys to choose from, whereas the Torpedo and Custom shop harmonica models will suit more advanced players looking for a richer tone and more comb and cover options. The most useful keys for Gospel songs will be a harmonica in C, D, G and A.
