Folk music is a music genre that is not written but rather transmitted orally like we said. It used to be played and learned around a campfire or group gatherings, used in tribal ceremonies and various ethnic groups or among group of workers (railroad track, mines …) or groups of the same ethnics. When we think about folk harmonica we usually refer to American folk music and more specifically Folk revival a genre that became extremely popular in the 1960s with songsters like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk … largely based on the Appalachian traditional folk music. Many of those artists incorporated the harmonica as a featured instrument played in a very simple but expressive way where the harmonica is an extension of the singer’s voice.
The best harmonicas for folk music
Usually the harmonica used to play Folk is a 10 hole diatonic harmonica that is tuned in the same key as the song. So if the folk song is in A, an harmonica in A would be used.
