The term Country Music appeared in the 1940s but the genre was already well alive earlier on. Deford Bailey was the first harmonica player to be featured on the Grand ole Opry and was induced in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005. His playing was very ahead of his time mixing rhythm and solo phrases on the harmonica. In the 1940-50s Lonnie Glosson recorded with many artists and his style was very melodic and an extension of what singers would do. In the 1960s a young player from Florida named Charlie McCoy went to Nashville to become the new sensation of country harmonica. His early style was very much influenced by Jimmy Reed and Little Walter but soon after he started to emulate what his fellow Nashville studio musicians were doing and gave birth to the modern bluegrass and country-music harmonica style with fast licks stolen from fiddle, mandolin, steel-guitar players and adapted on the harmonica. Several players copied or were influenced by his style and also became quite popular such as Norton Buffalo and Terry McMillan.
Country harmonica is mostly played in first and second position.
