Discover the world of rock harmonica

Rock harmonica is basically an extension of Blues harmonica. We can find some harmonica in Rock in the 1960's with Charlie McCoy accompanying Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison but in a very classic blues manner. At the same time Paul Butterfield developed a form of Blues rock harmonica in Chicago with his band and their hit "Born in Chicago" where you can hear his harmonica much more distorted than usual blues players as he was probably trying to mimick guitar sounds by using a microphone plugged in to a guitar amp. Al Wilson with the Canned Heat and their hit "On the road Again" is also a good example of departing the standard blues sound and usual licks. You can hear him use a special tuned harmonica in this song where the 6 draw is raised a half step up, a tuning available on demand in the Harmo Custom Shop.

Rock harmonica was taken a bit further from typical blues playing in the J.Geils Band where harmonica player Magic Dick used more distorted sounds, special effects and other special tuned harmonicas. Mark Ford (Robben Ford's brother) also used to play very aggressive and edgy licks reminiscent of guitar players. Jimmy Z in Eurythmics created some heavy colored sounds. Even the Rolling Stones got some harmonica with Sugar Blue as a guest and later on Mick Jagger himself.

Blues, Rock, Folk, Country,… : Choose a Diatonic Harmonica
Rock harmonica is usually played on a standard diatonic harmonica like the Harmo Polar and the Harmo Torpedo. Harmonicas are often in the keys of A, D, G and C. But Harmo custom shop harmonicas offer even more options to get special tunings and a greater array of sounds by selecting aluminum or brass comb and covers that will give you a more aggressive sound than wood.
